Are Bonnie products all-natural and organic?
Yes and no. First, let's define the terms. Often, people use "natural" and "organic" interchangeably, but this is incorrect. "Organic" in regard to cosmetics is not defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The term "organic" is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which oversees the National Organic Program (NOP). The FDA states, "The NOP regulations include a definition of "organic" and provide for certification that agricultural ingredients have been produced under conditions that would meet the definition. They also include labeling standards based on the percentage of organic ingredients in a product." It's also important to remember that an ingredient's source does not determine safety; some plants, like poison ivy for example, may still be toxic or allergenic even if they were grown organically.
Along the same lines, "natural" in regard to cosmetics is not defined by the FDA. In general, "natural" ingredients in cosmetics are derived from plant or animal sources as opposed to being produced synthetically. There are private organizations with their own definitions and regulations through which a product can be "certified natural," but these are subjective and may vary from one organization to the next.
Bonnie uses naturally-derived ingredients, some of which are organic. If organic ingredients are used in the product, they will be noted as such in the ingredient statement. The reason why Bonnie does not use only organic versions of naturally-derived ingredients is because they are more expensive (we've all been to Whole Foods), and my goal is to make effective, luxurious skin care available to everyone.
Some ingredients that were originally discovered in nature are synthetically manufactured for use in skincare, like panthenol (vitamin B5, found in avocados) and allantoin (found in comfrey). These ingredients are clean, safe, sustainable, and bio-identical.
Preservatives used by Bonnie have GRAS (Generally Accepted As Safe) status and are compliant with standards outlined by ECOCERT, Whole Foods, and/or the European REACH regulation.
Bonnie does employ the use of skin-safe, phthalate-free synthetic fragrances, albeit sparingly. These are used to keep costs down, as is the case with some fragrances where essential oil counterparts either do not exist or would cost half my rent.
Do Bonnie products contain synthetic fragrance?
Bonnie Facial Care, Body Care, and Bath Care products (with the exception of Cloud Bombs) do not contain any synthetic fragrance.
Skin-safe, phthalate-free fragrance oils (which are blends of essential oils plus natural and man-made aroma chemicals) are found in the Body Balm Candles and Cloud Bombs; see the shopping pages for each product for the full ingredient lists.
Do you have anything with SPF?
Bonnie doesn’t make any suncare. Over-the-counter cosmetics containing sunscreens are defined by the FDA as a drug, as it is intended to prevent a disease (namely, skin cancer). I do not currently have the means (read: $$$$) to have sunscreens tested to support sun protection claims.
You can purchase safe and effective suncare products by Aloe Up online and in-store.
Are Bonnie products vegan?
Most Bonnie products are vegan. The non-vegan ingredients used by Bonnie are limited.
Non-vegan ingredients are in the following products:
All lip products (Lip Balm, Tinted Lip Balm, Lip & Cheek Treatment Balm) contain beeswax. Lip & Cheek colors may contain carmine; refer to each product’s ingredient list.
Clarifying Mugwort Mask contains unpasteurized honey.
Oatmeal, Milk & Honey Soak contains powdered goat milk and powdered honey.
Mattifying Priming Lotion contains Fair Trade Certified honey derivatives.
Are Bonnie products gluten free?
Yes, except for two. Redefining Eye Serum and Rejuvenating Facial Serum contain hydrolyzed wheat gluten. All other Bonnie products do not contain wheat or any other grains containing gluten. Some ingredients are derived from wheat germ, such as cetearyl alcohol, but the manufacturing process removes all gluten peptides, making them safe for use by those with Celiac Disease.
Are Bonnie products packaged in recyclable packaging?
Yes. Facial care bottles and jars are made of recyclable glass, although the pump tops and caps are not recyclable. Products that may be taken into the shower are packaged in plastic primarily for safety reasons (including Facial Cleansers, Body Scrubs, and Body Cleansers), and the cleaned plastic is recyclable. All product boxes are recyclable.
Can Bonnie products be used while pregnant?
Always check with your doctor; but broadly, yes. The facial care products contain very low levels of essential oils, which are included firstly for their skincare benefits and secondly for their fragrance. The body care products contain higher concentrations of essential oils; if you are unsure about using them, it is best to check first with your doctor. Some doctors recommend that pregnant women avoid highly stimulating essential oils during pregnancy, such as rosemary and peppermint. However, everyone reacts to essential oils differently, so if you are unsure (and I can't stress this enough), check in with your doctor.
Do Bonnie products contain sulfates?
No. Sulfates are used as cleansing and foaming agents, and are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) and non-toxic (the cancer-causing myths about sulfates are untrue). Although sulfates, which are derived from coconut or palm kernel oils, can be administered into formulas safely and effectively, I choose not to use them because they have the potential to cause irritation. There are many mild and effective alternatives to sulfate-based detergents. None of the cleansers I've formulated need the heavy-duty cleaning power that sulfates can provide, so I felt it unnecessary to use them.
